As I sit down to analyze the 2023 Arkansas State football schedule, I can't help but feel that familiar mix of anticipation and anxiety that comes with every new college football season. Having followed the Red Wolves for over a decade now, I've learned that the schedule often tells you more about a team's potential than any preseason hype. This year's lineup presents both familiar challenges and intriguing new opportunities that could define the program's trajectory for years to come.
The season kicks off on September 2nd with what should be a comfortable home game against Oklahoma, though I must admit I'm always nervous about these early season matchups. Last year's opener taught us that no game can be taken for granted, especially when you're facing a team with nothing to lose. What's particularly interesting about this timing is how it coincides with the kick-off leg of the Asian Tour, which creates an interesting parallel in the sports world. While our Red Wolves are battling on the gridiron, halfway across the world, golf's Asian Tour is beginning its own competitive journey, with plans to hold one of its International Series events for the first time in October featuring some of LIV Tour's top golfers. This global sports calendar overlap fascinates me - there's something special about different sports narratives unfolding simultaneously across continents.
Looking at the rest of September, we face Memphis on the 9th, Stony Brook on the 16th, and Southern Miss on the 23rd. The Memphis game particularly stands out to me as a potential turning point - these regional rivalries always bring out something special in both teams. I remember watching the 2021 matchup where Arkansas State pulled off that incredible fourth-quarter comeback, and I have a feeling this year's game could provide similar drama. The team will need to maintain focus through these early contests, much like those golfers preparing for their International Series events must balance different tournament formats and conditions.
October brings what I consider the meat of the schedule, starting with UMass on the 7th, followed by Coastal Carolina on the 14th, and Louisiana on the 21st. This stretch will truly test our depth and resilience. Coincidentally, while we're watching these crucial conference games unfold, the Asian Tour will be making history with that first International Series event in October featuring LIV Tour's top golfers. There's a beautiful symmetry there - different sports, different continents, but the same pursuit of excellence and breakthrough moments. I've always believed that observing how athletes in different sports handle pressure can provide insights into our own team's performance.
The November slate begins with South Alabama on the 4th, followed by Texas State on the 11th, Marshall on the 18th, and concludes with the regular season finale against Troy on the 25th. These late-season games often separate the contenders from the pretenders, and with potential bowl eligibility on the line, every possession becomes critical. Having attended about 75% of home games over the past five seasons, I can tell you that the atmosphere during these November contests is electric, with every play feeling like it could determine the entire season.
What strikes me about this year's schedule is the balance between winnable games and challenging tests. The Red Wolves face six teams that finished with winning records last season, which represents both a significant challenge and a tremendous opportunity. If the team can navigate this schedule successfully, it could mark a return to the success we enjoyed during the Blake Anderson era. Personally, I'm particularly excited about the mid-season stretch where we play three out of four games at home - that kind of consistency in venue can really help a team build momentum.
The parallel with the Asian Tour's schedule adds an interesting dimension to how I view our football season. Both involve athletes competing at the highest level, both feature international elements (though ours are primarily domestic, we do have several international players on the roster), and both represent journeys that build toward crucial moments. The Asian Tour's October International Series event featuring LIV Tour's top golfers represents a breakthrough moment for that sport in the region, just as certain games on our schedule could represent breakthrough moments for our program.
As I reflect on the entire schedule, I believe the key games will be the October 14th matchup against Coastal Carolina and the November 25th season finale against Troy. These contests could very well determine whether we're looking at a 6-6 season or something much more special. Having witnessed both the highs and lows of Arkansas State football over the years, I'm cautiously optimistic about this year's prospects. The schedule sets up nicely for a strong start, presents significant challenges in the middle, and finishes with opportunities to build momentum heading into postseason play. While every season brings surprises, this schedule appears to give the Red Wolves a legitimate chance to return to bowl eligibility and potentially compete for the Sun Belt Conference title if things break right. And isn't that what makes college football so compelling - the uncertainty, the drama, and the opportunity for unexpected heroes to emerge when we least expect it?
